Cebu-based record label and production outfit PAWN Records recently launched the first edition of their DISPOP fanzine.

The zine features 90 pages of interviews, essays, and reviews, from various creatives in the Visayas-Mindanao music scene. Among those featured are bands Awkward Dancer, Gleam, Marcid, and Offals. DISPOP also features photos from local photographers such as Bordz and Neo Vignette Digizine. Each copy costs P199, although featured artists may avail of a discount.

The first batch of zines sold out during the recently concluded LATAG 4. In a Facebook post, the label announced that they will be printing the second batch of zines soon. Watch this space for more updates.

Upon talking about why they decided to launch a fanzine, PAWN wrote, “We noticed that a lot has been happening on the local music front as of late and there’s been not enough coverage (or not from our neck of the woods, at least). So to address that, we are back at making fanzines again. We think it’s about time.”

“For our comeback issue, we are highlighting the many varied and colorful personalities of the independent music scene. Not just the bands and artists themselves, but we’re including the gig organizers (prods, labels and collectives) and the new breed of photographers / videographers as well who are, mind you, doing god’s work in documenting and archiving the music scene, which to our knowledge, is out doing it on their own free time just because. So in a way, this our way of showing gratitude to them.”

They continued, saying, “We also think that making a fanzine opens up a more in-depth dialogue and exchange between artists and fans, performers and spectators, etc etc. For example, we will try to posit pressing inquiries like: ‘As artists, how can we help in making the scene more inclusive?’ or ‘From a fan’s perspective, how do I upset the power structure or hierarchy imposed by mainstream media’ etc, etc. We want to put forward these types of questions.”
